Barry

It's been a while since my last post, so I will try and bring you up to speed with my life... Last week we had a guy called Barry, from amnesty International. He came into uni to talk about his involvement with amnesty and advertising for there charity. I think he was quite helpful with the stuff he told us, in his big group speech to us. We were then split up into smaller groups to ask us to specific questions.. but ill be honest he went on a bit.... so he gave me some good ideas to think about for my project.

Apart from that we had a day project last week, called black box. We were each put into groups and then given a work that we had to make clues for our words so we could give it to the other group to make up there own minds on what we were describing.  Our group was give the words, 'dorset cereals' to gives clues for, while we had to guess 'Ecover, washing up liquid' through a crossword idea. As a group I think we worked pretty well, and believe we had a strong and fun final product to show for our days work. 

In the end we decided to make a television advert. We used our hands to make the item such as a cup, a plate, a knife and a fork to run away from the washing up liquid bottle. We did a bit of a photo shoot to generate ideas for a poster we also made, to go with the advert. 

Aside from the black box day, I have been frantically trying to write the 2000 word draft for our essay hand in which was 5 o clock on thursday. I was proud because I managed to finish it a whole day early. So I handed it in on Wednesday. 

This now gives me some time to really think about amnesty, and do that poster for the international college thing.   

Black Box

I was quite intrigued when we came in to class in the morning and I wasn't sure what to expect because it sounded like quite a difficult subject matter. Our group was given 'Dorset cereals' to give clues for. We decided that we would make a set of easy clues and a set of harder clues if the group didn't get what they were. 

Our group was given a crossword with some quite mixed clues on it. Some were easy, some were hard but once we had guessed some of them then we decided it was quite easy to guess the missing words. Our product we had to design a poster for was 'Ecover washing up liquid.' We didn't hesitate to get our ideas down onto paper. Our main idea was a film and using the on-campus halls to dress up as different eating utensils and running through each door, much like a scooby doo cartoon. In the end we thought the costumes would be to difficult to pull off on a large scale in the 3 hour period we had, so we used scaled utensils instead and used the halls sink as our stage. In the end I think our group had generated a really promising idea, I just wished we could have finished it. 

save less spend more

Today we had to work in groups to design a poster to promote the idea of saving less and spending more.

I think it was a particularly hard task to begin with because the idea generation was very minimal. Once we had done a bit of research, we were then able to pull ideas from the work we discovered. We went off on our own to make some individual posters, and then came back at the end to discuss the best ideas and how we could bring them together to create one piece. I really liked the way two of our ideas came together. 

Quark

Today I came into college on a self directed research day! I made my 3rd illustration which, now completes my series of editorial illustrations. I also imported the picture into quark so my book was then ready for printing.

Aside from that I began my proposal and evaluation which were supposed to be 500 words each. I managed to complete the evaluation but I still have to do the proposal once my book has been checked and I am happy with the layout.

I think that I have had a very productive day, and I guess I'm kind of looking forward to my hand in, because everything is almost complete.

Layout for critique

We were shown how to use Quark the other day by Kit,  she showed us how to make different layouts and how to add pictures and text to a document. We have been briefed to make a book of our journey through our text and image unit so far, so I have been working on pages for Poole and vernacular typography. This picture is part of my pre- lim spreads for my book:

Book Binding

So I have ben pretty busy trying to finish the rest of my project for the hand in next week,

Hannah showed us how to do book binding which was pretty cool, I think my favorite one was the japanese style of binding. Even though it was my favorite, it was the one that took the most effort to create. 

Aside from that, I went round Winton and Bournemouth taking pictures for my vernacular typography project. so I managed to finish my photo-montages. Now all I have left to do is the editorial illustrations and annotations.

The last week has been looking back at all the projects we have done and seeing how close to finishing each part we are. I think my tutorial with Kit went well and let me see the standard of my working comparison to everyone else's, which was encouraging.

Today I had Pal, where we basically did some stuff on time planning, we were put into groups to help each other decide which, projects had more importance to others. I felt some of the stuff we covered useful, while the other stuff could have been better time managed by doing projects. 

This week we have been taught how to use illustrator, I decided t

o start a side project of creating this sun-seeker boat with just the aid of illustrator. While som

e of it was fun, it was just mostly frustrating I also managed to corrupt the original file, which was a little annoying, but i think I almost concluded it well... (took me ages)
